What can Immersive Media do for you?

your chance to influence future research in the field

You're in the airport waiting on your connection. Enough time to dial into your sales team video conference. Your tablet app joins you into conference and seats you beside everyone else at the virtual boardroom table. You pull up a virtual power point and move through the presentation using gestures, before dialling out. After your flight you relax in your hotel room watching the rugby game. You take control of the camera to select the viewing angle you want, zoom in or choose action view - even from the middle of the scrum. During the commercial break the smell of pizza wafting from the TV causes you to reach out and order a Margitha right there and then!

These are just some of the possibilities enabled by Immersive Media, the use of multi-device (PC, tablet, mobile), multi-modal (gesture/touch), multimedia (audio, video), multisensory (sent, touch...) technologies, combined with high-performance cloud-based processing that give people the sense of "being there". Immersive media promises to revolutionise user interaction and experience over a wide range of application fields including, Gaming, Health, Education, Tourism, Social Networking, Enterprise collaboration, Telecommunications, in the process creating new opportunities for innovation and business growth in all of these fields.

The Software Research Institute (SRI) in Athlone Institute of Technology invites you to a workshop in IBEC house on March 1 to help create a Cloud based Mobile Immersive Media Applied Research Enhancement (ARE) centre - a five-year research programme sponsored by Enterprise Ireland. ARE research centre are strongly geared to the needs of industry and industry directed over the lifetime of the centre. Enterprise Ireland is currently seeking proposals for new ARE centres. This is your opportunity to convince El that research in Immersive Media is important for your business and a potential critical business differentiator for your commercial future, to have your needs included in the centre research agenda and to influence the governance of the centre over its lifetime.
