Ericsson found working with ITB an excellent and beneficial experience. From the development of the programme to the delivery, they were an ideal partner.

Network+ and CISCO Certificate Network Associate (CCNA)

Approximately 100 Ericsson employees participated, with 93% successfully completing the training. The programme was accredited, with each completing participant awarded with an industry-recognised CCNA qualification at level 6 on the Irish National Framework of Qualifications.

Ericsson is a world leader in 2G, 3G and 4G mobile technologies. The company's portfolio comprises mobile and fixed network infrastructure, telecom services, software, broadband and multimedia solutions for operators, enterprises and the media industry. The Ericsson Academy, based in Dublin, provides telecommunications learning solutions and educational programmes to Ericsson employees as well as to customers. In response to the move towards converged technologies, Ericsson Academy engaged with the ICT Learning Network at the Institute of Technology, Blanchardstown (ITB) to develop and deliver a training programme in Network+ and CISCO Certificate Network Associate (CCNA).
The ICT Learning Network is based within the Department of Informatics in ITB. It specialises in the delivery of programmes to industry such as CCNA, CompTIA A+ and Network+. Led by manager Tom Nolan, the ICT Learning Network liaised with Ericsson to design a bespoke training programme that would help up-skill Ericsson employees in IP and other networking technologies. The ICT Learning Network tailored the training programme to the specific needs and time frame of the Ericsson Academy and Ericsson employees. The programme was delivered in two phases. Phase one was a short course in CompTIA Network+, delivered over 3-6 days of training. This was followed by a longer programme of CCNA, delivered over 20 weeks.

Qualifications

Participants also received 20 academic credits from ITB, which can contribute towards a future third level qualification. The training programme, developed and delivered by The ICT Learning Network has provided significant benefits. Ericsson employees have gained expertise in Network+ and CISCO and have gained an industry-recognised qualification. For the company, this has resulted in improved employee satisfaction and capability, which, in turn, will build on Ericsson's competitive edge in the area of IP technology and training. It has also helped academic programmes at ITB to remain closely aligned with industry.
