Esports and Traditional Sport: Unexpected Connections in Ireland

26 August 202626 August 2026 adminbaUncategorised

For years, traditional sport and esports existed in separate worlds. One happened on pitches and tracks. The other happened on screens and in digital arenas. One was about physical athleticism. The other was about reaction time, strategy, and teamwork in virtual space.

These worlds are now colliding in Ireland. Traditional sporting organisations are recognising that esports is not a threat. It is an opportunity. And the connections between the two are creating new pathways for players, new commercial opportunities, and new ways to engage with younger audiences .

How the Worlds Are Converging

Esports is no longer a niche interest. The global esports industry generated nearly $1 billion in revenue in 2020, with audiences of over 400 million people . For traditional sports bodies in Ireland, the appeal is clear. Esports reaches a demographic that is hard to reach through conventional channels: the 18-35 age group that is digitally native, tech-savvy, and has disposable income . This is the audience that traditional sport needs to engage with to stay relevant.

Jonny Madill, a leading sports lawyer who works in the Irish esports industry, explains it simply: “Esports is in essence professional video gaming in an organised format, where – as in traditional sport – players and teams compete for prize money” . All the revenue streams that exist in traditional sport also exist in esports: sponsorship, broadcasting, advertising, and even betting. In some areas, esports is growing faster .

League of Ireland and WYLDE: A Partnership for Growth

The most significant development in Ireland came in 2026. The League of Ireland appointed WYLDE as its official esports and gaming partner in a multi-year deal . This partnership connects the traditional world of football with the fast-growing world of esports .

Under the agreement, WYLDE delivers Ireland’s national football esports competitions, including the ELOI. These events bring players from grassroots competition all the way to the eChampions League and the Esports World Cup . The winner of the ELOI represents Ireland internationally, carrying both their country’s flag and the crest of their football club .

WYLDE, founded in 2021, has championed grassroots development in esports and opened Ireland’s first dedicated National Esports Centre . The partnership reflects a shared vision: to grow participation, create opportunity, and inspire Irish talent at every level .

The Irish Rugby Path: IQ Rugby

The IRFU has taken a different but equally significant approach. Its IQ Rugby programme is about identifying real, physical talent in the Irish diaspora . This is not virtual. It is about finding players born or raised outside Ireland who are qualified to play for Ireland through birth, parents, or grandparents .

The programme has been running since 2017 and is an integral part of the IRFU High Performance Pathway. It operates a player-centred model, responsible for identifying and registering Irish Qualified (IQ) male and female players around the world. The path leads all the way to provincial and international rugby . While the League of Ireland is building a virtual pathway through esports, the IRFU is building a physical one through talent identification.

The Esports Ecosystem: Education and Infrastructure

Ireland’s esports ecosystem is also developing independently. The Ireland Esports Federation (IEF) is the recognised national body for esports, with a mission to promote esports across the 32 counties, set educational and coaching standards, and inspire the next generation of esports talent .

The IEF maintains strategic relationships across domestic and international institutions. It is Ireland’s sole representative member within the Global Esports Federation, the International Esports Federation, and the European Esports Federation . It has formal partnerships with New Zealand Esports and is working with state-backed agencies like the Education and Training Board (ETB) to deliver youth education programmes .

The National Esports Centre, opened in 2025, is a key part of this infrastructure. It provides tournament delivery, bootcamp facilities, and broadcast capabilities .

The Future

The connections between traditional sport and esports in Ireland are likely to grow. As the League of Ireland partnership demonstrates, traditional sports bodies see value in reaching esports audiences. As the esports ecosystem matures through bodies like the IEF, new opportunities for collaboration will appear.

The example of the IRFU’s IQ Rugby programme shows that traditional sport can also offer a physical pathway for players with a connection to Ireland, complementing the virtual pathways that organisations like the League of Ireland are building through esports.

For a small country, Ireland is building a remarkable presence across both worlds. And the connections between them are only going to become stronger.
